Social Justice Across Borders and Classrooms: An Interdisciplinary Course Project

Maier, G. & Dubreil, S.

This presentation focuses on a Modern Languages course that examines social justice in Germany, France and the United States. This intercultural course consists of two separate courses taught in German and French respectively, and includes a collaborative element during which students share their discoveries regarding social justice and discuss possible implications of all three systems for its societies. These joint sessions, taught in English, involve inter- and multicultural explorations and tangible deliverables (e.g. a poster, a letter, etc.). We would like to delineate our interdisciplinary approach, share the topics and materials we discuss in the classroom and present our joint-class projects, which include an exchange with students overseas and interviews with local NGOs. We believe that our approach could serve as a model for other fields and disciplines, especially within CMU with its recent emphasis on team-teaching, e.g., in the form of Grand Challenge seminars.
